One of the best ways to attract visitors to your blog (or any website, for that matter) is to add posts to forums with a link to your blog in your signature.
If your blog is targeted at a specific audience, try to find forums about that topic and ask and answer questions. Those who are curious to learn more about the person who posted may stop by your blog...if it's catchy enough they may subscribe or come back later!
If your blog is informational in nature, answering other people's questions on forums is a great way to add credibility to your site!
(And now for the "practice what you preach" lesson...here is my signature!)

O.K seems to me that following this guys steps is not (always) a good practice, I know I have done it in the past too, the idea of dropping into random forums dropping a post/thread and never returning is a bad practice and can be seen as spam, you will no doubt infuriate the admin and other members, my advice is to save a few busy or good forums (as favorites)that are relevant to your Blog or Site and become a regular and return often or when you have time, starting a Thread or Topic and getting coments (you may well ask for) but never coming back to read or reply to may be more of a hassle than good.
Eventually your posts and links will disapear, if the admin dislikes your thread or sees it as spam may also bag you and your blog/website which also damages your reputation and site credibility.
Other annoying things :
PPL who obviously copy and paste the same message on multiple forums and or Blogs.
PPL who write "I like your Blog, pls have a look at mine"
PPL who write you may also be interested in "dodgy url.com"
I know that this guy may not be saying to go out and spam forums, but I was just giving a heads up.

@Jakes
Yeah you do have a point, a lot of members try that method a lot, just copy one thread and post the same on a ton of forums.
I guess it is annoying, but if it's for an item on sale or anything, I don't think that's a big problem...

If those copy and paste are useful for us, I think it is acceptable.

Tell more people about it. I still get traffic from posts here even though no one harldy post. I think the name of the site will always bring traffic. If more people post then others will register.
